Let’s Talk Breeding!

Welcome to the brand new Rancho Corazon blog! Let me introduce myself, my name is Kendra Loring. In 1994, as a working student from Johnson and Wales University, I first set eyes on the 400 acres of Rancho Corazon and Rancho la Querencia. I immediately fell madly in love with this magical place. I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Equine Studies, but I have spent the last 18 years of my life as a retail store manager. In December of 2011, I joined the McElvain Ranch family as Assistant Ranch Manager where I am fortunate to be able to combine my passion for horses and my love of journalism with this blog.

Recently I had the privilege of sitting down with an expert in the field of horse breeding. If you ever had a question about Holsteiner bloodlines or wondered which Sport horse would be right for your needs, there was never a better source of information than Elizabeth McElvain, founder of Rancho la Querencia. Betty has spent the last 30 years breeding incredibly versatile Sport horses.  We sat down one crisp winter morning in Betty’s gorgeous kitchen to discuss her vast knowledge of Holsteiner breeding.

Here at Rancho Corazon we stand 6 brilliant Holsteiner stallion; Boritas (Baldini I/Alcatraz/Caletto II), Carino G (Caretino/Riverman/Seventh Landing), Cimarron (Columbus/Laredo/Crackpot), Contagious (Carolus/Lenz/Tim Rod), Cortegiano (Conejo HF/Loutano/Coriolan) and Love Affair (Larno/Cor de la Bryere).  We also have 18 proven broodmares of various Holsteiner, Oldenburg and Thoroughbred bloodlines.  We even have multiple generations of offspring from the outstanding Rancho la Querencia stallion, Columbus, in our broodmare herd now! Kachina Dancer (MM) is a Columbus daughter and her daughter Paloma Flora is our first mare, in foal to Carino G, due this year! At the moment we have five Love Affair and three Mr. Wizard daughters in our breeding program! But, let’s talk about the guys!

One of our much loved Stallions here on the ranch is Boritas. Recently retired to a green pasture, he was Betty’s granddaughter’s mount for two years.  His sire is Baldini I from Bachus. Bachus is a son of the Shagya Arabian Bajar, an Arabian stallion from Poland, who was brought to Schleswig Holstein in an effort to recreate the impact of the famous progenitor Ramzes– a Shagya/Thoroughbred cross, founding sire of Holsteiner, Trakahner and other Warmblood breeds and grandsire of Ramiro Z.

Boritas’ sire, Baldini I, is the full brother of Baldini II. Baldini II is the sire of Meredith Michaels- Beerbaum’s Grand Prix mare, Bella Donna. Bella Donna has had an incredible showing this year. She has qualified for the jump off in every 1.55-1.60 meter class she’s been in this past year! The pair even won their Grand Prix debut in Germany last year! All the horses in this line are fantastic jumpers! Rancho Corazon has four 2011 foals from Boritas; two gorgeous colts – Brazos out of Ultima (PM) and Borealis out of Kachina Dancer (MM) and two beautiful fillies – Delilah out of Venetia (MMP) and Daphne out of Raphia (MM).

Another of our approved Holsteiner stallions, Cimarron, was the leading eventing sire in the USEF! A son of Columbus, “Cimarron has a great work ethic and disposition,” says Betty. One of his sons, C-Aqua Tom, was recently named USEA Area 2 “Horse of the Year.”  Cimarron produces top quality athletes, two of his 2011 offspring were “Premium Foals” at the American Holsteiner Horse Association approvals last year! We currently have 11 of Cimarron’s young sons and daughters on the sales list and two more on the way in 2012. What a great future jumping partner they would make!

Love Affair is an approved stallion from two of the premier Holsteiner lines – Landgraf I and Cor de la Bryere. He is currently listed in the top 50 sires in the USEF standings.  He sires “brilliant hunters.”  He is the reason why his breeder, Lieselott Wiendieck, was listed #3 in Hunter producers in 2011.  He also is a top Dressage producer; he is among the top Dressage sires in 2011. We have two 2009 fillies; Bling Bling, out of Ines (MM) and Brazil, out of Ophelia (MMP) and two 2011 fillies; Danube out of Pepita (MMP) and Dionysius out of Ophelia (MMP) from Love Affair on the sales list. In 2012, we have three more Love Affair foals due!

Our young Stallion, Carino G (Caretino/Riverman/Seventh Landing), is also a favorite around here!  Betty remembers when Carino was only 3 days old, she drove down to see him and purchased him on the spot. Carino was bred by Roberta Gammill in Las Cruces, NM.  He is such a willing jumper, Betty says “he just wants to keep jumping higher and higher!” Carino sired his first foal last year. This flashy colt, Carioco RC, is out of Shona, Mr. Wizard/Saceur, (MMP).   In 2012 we are having 6 more Carino progeny; we are very excited to see these foals!

I hope this look into the quality breeding stock at Rancho Corazon was fun and informative! Whether you are looking for show jumpers, dressage prospects, hunters or eventers, Rancho Corazon has many excellent Sport horses for any budget.  If you would like to come take a look at our fine young horses, please feel free to contact us through the website! www.ranchocorzon.us

Happy New Year!!

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season! We have survived the insane winter weather of this past December! Record amounts of moisture in Lemitar and Socorro! Hopefully January will bring us some dryer weather! Between the cold, the snow and the rain it’s been nearly impossible to ride these last few weeks. Despite all that, everyone is doing well and getting ready for the winter show season to begin!

This blog page will be a fun way for us to let all our friends and family worldwide know what’s going on here at Rancho Corazon. We will keep you updated as to our foaling and breeding successes as well as showing results. We will have interviews with staff members on things they are looking forward to in the new year. Thanks for reading!
